Sun 5 Jul 2009 LONDON GAY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA LGSO SPRING CONCERT

The LGSO brings the genius of Rachmaninov to St John’s, Smith Square with performances of the Russian master’s Second Piano Concerto and Third Symphony.  The Rachmaninov works are preceded by Glinka’s popular overture to Russlan and Ludmilla.

First heard in its entirety in 1901, the Second Piano Concerto is one of Rachmaninov’s most enduring works and a major component of the composer’s development of an individual style.  In it, he develops the tone of his early compositional style, with its echoes of Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov, into a new style of Russian nationalism.  He references Russian folk music, as his predecessors had done, but overlays an agitated sense of freneticism reflecting the social and artistic dynamism of turn of the century Russia.  Rachmaninov’s own piano virtuosity finds its way into the solo part that calls for a full dynamic palate of the instrument and refined lyrical playing alternating with passages of thunderous chords. St John’s, Smith Square, London SW1P 3HA, 7pm. Price: £15 (£10 concessions) | Booking | London | more info ...
